On the first day that 10-year-old Natascha Kampusch was allowed to walk to school by herself, she was kidnapped by a man in a white van on the streets of suburban Vienna.
She was taken to a windowless room under the man’s basement, where she spent the next eight years in a nightmare, suffering terrible abuse. Despite everything, Natascha never gave up hope that she would escape. She even had visions of her 18-year-old self, who told her that she would be free one day. After 3,096 days of being held captive, she finally escaped, just like her older self had promised.
