I caught my 13 year old daughter using pads for her period without my permission. What do I do now?

Maybe we should ask Molly Pawlett.

When she woke up one day in April 2017, she assumed she must have a sickness bug, but not much later a rash started to spread, and she did not know what was happening.

But here’s the thing: her mom did, and contrary to what you would do — this kind of problem requires a healthy relationship between parents and their children — her mom asked Molly “whether she was wearing a tampon.”

And contrary to what your daughter would tell you (she would be too ashamed or simply afraid), 14-year-old Molly answered her mom without hesitation that she did, and removed it straight away. By then she was already so sick that her mom decided to rush her to the hospital.

Once in the hospital it turned out that Molly’s organs had already starting to shut down, triggering sepsis — which strikes when an infection sparks a violent immune response in which the body attacks its own organs.

In Molly’s case, it happened because tampon use (for too long a time in one sitting) encourages certain bacteria strains to grow, and this in turn can sometimes lead to toxic shock syndrome.

Molly barely survived the ordeal, but there are actually many cases known in which (usually young) women die for the very same reason. And sometimes some form of period shaming is involved, be it by friends or by parents —
